One of the most famous wines in the world, Château Mouton-Rothschild is located in Pauillac, around 30 miles north-west of Bordeaux itself. The 2006 vintage is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot. Showcasing a complex array of aromas, combining bilberry fruit character with the toasted aromas (tobacco, incense, toasted hazelnut) of judicious oak. Richly flavoured tannins on a full and powerful palate. Alongside the quality of their wine, Mouton-Rothschild are also famous for their commissioning of world famous artists to create their labels with a new design featuring each year and the 2006 vintage is designed by the celebrated artist Lucien Freud.

The 2006 Mouton Rothschild is dark, powerful and intense, with firm tannins that need time to soften. This is an especially dark, somber Mouton. Dark black fruit, smoke, menthol gravel and cured meats are some of the signatures. Slight vegetal notes underpin the fruit. I am not sure the 2006 has enough freshness to be a long-term ager or the depth of fruit to outlast the tannins. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, harvested between September 20 and October 5.Antonio Galloni1st May 2016

87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, harvested 20 September – 5 October.Very dark purple but with quite a pale rim. Not very expressive on the nose at the moment – seems if anything a bit weedy. Very strict, bone dry, treading a very fine line between elegance and meagreness. They’re obviously playing the finesse card but the finish is very dry and drying indeed. This is very Cabernet, but has remarkably little weight. I think for a great wine to be this light it also has to have a bit more aromatic expression and allure but this may well develop. (JR)

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
