Mouton Rothschild 1972 is a Second Growth red wine from the Pauillac estate in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. This vintage is notable for featuring a label illustrated by the artist Serge Poliakoff, part of the estate`s tradition of commissioning bespoke artwork for each release. The 1972 growing season was difficult due to a cool and wet autumn, resulting in a wine that is lighter in body and more structured by acidity than warmer years. This wine offers tertiary notes of cedar, leather and dried herbs, with the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend now fully mature. It serves as a historical document of the estate`s winemaking before its official elevation to First Growth status in 1973.

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
