Château Mouton Rothschild is the iconic First Growth estate located within the Pauillac appellation. The final vintage of the 1950s left a lasting legacy for Bordeaux, yielding an abundance of opulent, velvety, and lavish wines. Renowned for their prominent tannins and alcohol content, the top-tier selections from this vintage such as Mouton Rothschild are still offering a delightful drinking experience today.
93 Vinous
- Full, deep red. Knockout nose combines plum, exotic woodsmoke, cedar, menthol and grilled nuts, plus a hint of maple syrup. Powerfully structured and still tightly wound; today the lively acids and strong tannins combine to give the wine a somewhat rigid texture. Still rather austere, even a tad dry, on the finish. Not quite up to past bottles of this great vintage of Mouton, which typically displays more richness and primary fruit character to go with its steel-like spine.

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
