90 Vinous
The 1957 Mouton Rothschild was served blind, the first time I had encountered this particular vintage. It has a surprisingly fresh nose of wild mint, cranberry and damp undergrowth, clean and well defined, certainly expressing the typicity of Pauillac after so many years. The palate offers sweet red cherry and crushed strawberry on the entry, the acidity higher than coeval vintages and demonstrating some volatility towards the finish. However, there is impressive density and structure to this off-vintage Mouton even if it does not possess the detail and focus of the very best wines from this era. You come away from the 1957 Mouton thinking – good job.Neal Martin1st February 2018

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
