The 1990 grand vin from Saint-Estèphe Second Growth, Château Montrose is possibly one of the finest wines they have ever produced which is incredible to believe considering it followed the almighty 1989. It is a full-bodied and powerful blend composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Undoubtedly in its prime for drinking now, this should continue to develop over the next decade or so.

Served from magnum. This is tobacco, cigar box, turmeric, white pepper spice, olive paste, liqourice root and smoked earth, gentle autumnal fruits but still beating within a tannic frame. Harvested September 14 and October 3, after one of the hottest growing seasons on record at the time.Jane Anson23rd June 2022

Deep brick in color, the 1990 Montrose erupts from the glass with a powerful nose of prunes, creme de cassis, and tar, followed by gentle wafts of crushed rocks, sweaty leather, iodine, truffles, and iron ore. The medium-bodied palate, plush, multi-layered, and elegantly styled, delivers compelling freshness and a long ferrous finish. The Montrose 1990 is infamous for bottle variation, with some bottles being badly affected by Brettanomyces. I've had severely Bretty bottles twice and once I had a pristine bottle, which was simply magic. This bottle, which came directly from the Château, had a mild dose of Brett, which didn't bother me and about half of the other tasters in the room, but there were some who detest Brett and didn't enjoy it. I tasted the 1990 again at the Château a few months later and the experience was similar. If you really don't like that sweaty saddles/iodine character instilled by Brett, this wine may not be your cup of tea. The blend for this year is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc.Lisa Perrotti-Brown20th September 2023

The 1990 Montrose is a divisive wine that can either leave you entranced or scratching your head, depending upon the level of Brettanomyces. Before I continue, this bottle did possess some Brett, albeit not as extreme as I have encountered previously. It has a powerful nose, animally, touches of singed leather and mocha. It is not Rhône-like in style, but it does lean that way. The palate is dense and grippy, with plush black fruit, some Brettanomyces compromising its delineation, and a dash of black pepper on the finish. On this occasion, I feel the 2010 Montrose shades it, although a second bottle proved fresher. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Icons of Bordeaux dinner at Legacy Records in New York. Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
