Château Montrose 1989 is a mature-vintage Left Bank Bordeaux from the Second Growth Château Montrose in St-Estèphe. Montrose produces some of the longest-lived wines in the Médoc. The estate`s Grand Vin is typically a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine is matured in 30% new oak barriques for 18 months. The 1989 Bordeaux vintage is considered to be one of the great vintages of the 20th century. "On the nose, there were intense aromas of iron, pot iron and dried fruits, as well as hints of nuts and wet earth. On the palate, it showed a gorgeous texture of ripe tannins and lots of spicy and currant fruit character. A full-bodied, very soft and silky Bordeaux with lots of flavours and a superb finish. Just right now -- indeed it seems to be getting younger with age, not older! Decant an hour before. I think it`s better than the legendary 1990. It`s certainly cleaner and more consistent quality." The 1989 Montrose can flirt with perfection when it wants to. This bottle, poured blind, is not the best example I have tasted, partly because it displays just a soupcon of Brettanomyces on the nose. The aromatics have a lovely warmth, with blackberries, rosemary and pencil shavings. However, because of the Brett, I feel that other bottles display more delineation. The palate is well-balanced, with a succulent entry and moderate depth. It's a little more savory than expected, which is why I failed to identify it. I will put a question mark against my score because there are definitely better bottles out there. Tasted blind at Chez Bruce, London. Neal Martin2nd July 2024

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
