The 1988 Montrose is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between 26 September and 9 October. I was not taken with this wine when I tasted it as part of my Montrose vertical series in 2016. A couple of years later, the nose still does not impress nearly as much as the following two vintages, remaining rather flat and static, still with touches of oxtail and dried blood infusing the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, moderate depth, missing the structure both for a Montrose and considering the vintage. It is a disappointing Montrose especially when the team oversaw one of the wines of the decade twelve months later. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st May 2018

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
