Montrose 1986 is a notable example from this Second Growth estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux. The vintage is recognised for its robust structure, stemming from a challenging growing season that resulted in significant tannin presence. This wine is predominantly a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 65%), supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its deep garnet colour hints at the wine’s intensity, revealing aromas of dark fruits, soil, and subtle spice. The finish exhibits a firm tannic grip, indicating that further cellaring is advisable. Montrose has established a reputation for longevity in its wines since the 18th century.

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
