The 1983 Montrose has a slightly flaccid bouquet with soy-tinged red fruit, somewhat acetic and missing the freshness and vitality of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a sour entry, very sharp, lacking depth and amplitude with a one-dimensional finish. I have always considered this Montrose to be a failure in the context of the vintage, and this merely reconfirms that view. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st August 2023

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
