Château Montrose is a Second Growth wine producer situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, known for its elegant, long-lived wines. 1982 is viewed by many as the greatest vintage of modern times, with perfect weather conditions to grow grapes of the highest quality. Montrose 1982 is no exception. An incredibly elegant wine delivering notes of cocoa, mocha, ripe strawberries and blackberries.

A soft plum colour, beginning to soften towards tawny and amber around the edge. On the nose tobacco, truffles, beeswax, walnut, saffron, camphor, with a softly spoken blackberry and gentle woodsmoke. Very much in its drinking window, just starting to get strawberry and higher acidity notes on the finish. This is made for a cigar and a book in front of a fire, or for chatting long into the evening with friends. Drink now and over the next five to 10 years, although no doubt it will surprise us for a few decades more. Last tasted July 2018 and it has dropped a little since then, although could be bottle variation. Harvest September 14-29. 100% 1st wine at this point, as Dame de Montrose arrived in 1986.Jane Anson22nd September 2021

The 1982 Montrose is an epochal wine for this writer as it opened my mind to the joy of fermented grape juice in the first furlongs of my career. Though I have drunk it countless times thereafter, never from an imperial and no doubt that underlines why this is one of the best examples. Old school on the nose that is armed with scents of forest floor, freshly-rolled tobacco and pencil shavings, it is not earth-shatteringly complex, yet has more grace compared to regular bottles. Likewise, the palate is well balanced and fresh, delicate considering château and vintage, fine-boned with darker fruit laced with cedar towards the finish. Delicious, though it’s a Montrose that delivers in larger formats these days and would pale against the 1989 or a non-Brettanomyces affected 1990.Neal Martin16th February 2024

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
