Montrachet often stands high above all other white Burgundy crus in terms of quality, complexity and longevity. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s holdings consist of three parcels in the Le Montrachet lieu-dit in Chassagne-Montrachet, totalling just 0.68 hectares surface area with vines that are, on average, 50 years of age. Of the eight grand cru wines that DRC makes, this has the smallest production and is, therefore, often the rarest bottling. The 1999 is a rich, broad and dense release, at best for drinking now.

The 1999 Montrachet is always a bit edgy, which keeps it from entering the realm of the truly sublime. Even so, the best examples, such as this one, show terrific freshness as well as persistence. Overall, the 1999 is a quiet wine, with a little less of everything relative to the finest years. Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York. Antonio Galloni1st June 2019
