When considering which Burgundy cru is the greatest for white wine, Montrachet stands alone in terms of quality, complexity and longevity. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s holdings consist of three parcels in the Le Montrachet lieu-dit in Chassagne-Montrachet, totalling just 0.68 hectares surface area with vines that are, on average, 50 years of age. Of the eight grand cru wines that DRC makes, this has the smallest production and is, therefore, often the rarest bottling. The Wine Advocate awarded the 1996 with 96 points.

Vinous
As it so often is, the 1996 Montrachet is a total stunner. In the last few years, the 1996 has lost some of its youthful tension and has begun to relax a little. Even so, it remains very much vibrant and finely sculpted in feel, with cool, bracing mineral notes that wrap around a core of citrus, white flower, orchard fruit and slate nuances. The 1996 is quite simply one of the truly epic DRC Montrachets. Tasted at the Los Angeles DRC Montrachet vertical.Antonio Galloni1st June 2019
