Domaine des Comtes Lafon Monthélie Les Duresses 2019 is a 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the village of Monthélie in the Côte de Beaune. Les Duresses is the only 1er Cru vineyard on the western side of Monthélie and is located between Volnay and Meursault. "Notes of sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil introduce the 2019 Monthélie Les Duresses, a medium-bodied, beautifully refined red with a lively core of fruit that`s framed by powdery, ultra-refined tannins. This has turned out especially well... Both more concentrated and more incisive in white and finer-boned and more elegant in red, I`d give the nod to 2019 over 2018 in both colours at this address. And that is quite a compliment, as Lafon really excelled in 2018. In short, as Dominique hands the reins to the next generation, it`s fair to say that the Domaine des Comtes Lafon is in very fine shape indeed." Wine Advocate, 2021
Vinous
The 2019 Monthélie Les Duresses offers crisp raspberry and red cherry scents on the nose, which is well defined and floral in style. The palate is fresh on the entry, and quite fleshy for a Monthélie, with a brisk, uncomplicated finish. Fine.Neal Martin1st December 2020

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
