Here is the first wine from Château Monlot, a 400 year-old estate located near the small medieval town of Saint-Émilion. The 2012 vintage is a blend of 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. The wine is a beautiful deep garnet colour. A flattering nose that reveals notes of coffee grounds, liquorice, and black fruits such as blackberries. The palate is dense and complex with ripe black fruits, the tannins velvety in the mouth. A beautifully long finish.

Vinous
(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc): Bright red-ruby. Red berries and flowers on the nose, complicated by vanilla and minerals. Then more red berries and flowers on the palate, with a bright mineral overlay and zippy acidity lifting the flavors at the back. Finishes clean and long, with smooth tannins and noteworthy freshness. There is only about 15% cabernet franc in the blend but it makes its floral, perfumed presence felt. Potentially outstanding wine: after I had tasted this wine (Chinese actress Zhao Wei bought this property in late 2011), I was not surprised to learn that Jean-Claude Berrouet of Petrus fame consults here.
