Having established his namesake winery in 1966 with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi is unequivocally an icon of American wine. The 1984 release is now fully mature with notes of dried dark fruits, spices, cigar smoke and liquorice.
88 Vinous
(12.5% alcohol; 16-1/2 days of skin contact): Dark medium red. Musky aromas of plum and leather. Boasts good energy and vinosity but only moderate flavor development, with the currant and leather flavors showing a strong green pepper element that suggests the vines were picked too early. Interestingly, Geneviève Janssens noted that through the '80s, the vineyard manager at Mondavi selected the date of the harvest and typically picked early. Since then, however, the winemakers have spent much more time in the vineyards and have been responsible for harvesting decisions.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2016

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
