Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1978 is a mature-vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley of California. Robert Mondavi is the undisputed godfather of modern Californian winemaking and the older vintages of Mondavi Cabernets are some of the most sought-after and collectible wines from the region. "The wine is really one of the best Mondavi Cabernets of the decade of the 1970s and continues to drink beautifully today at age 38. The bouquet wafts from the glass in an excellent mélange of black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of eucalyptus, a fine base of Rutherford Bench soil tones and a deft touch of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and alive with the vibrancy of peak maturity, with a good core, tangy acids and outstanding length and grip on the refined and very classy finish. This is at its apogee and is a superb example of the fine ’78 vintage." John Gilman, 2017

With repesct to older vintages, in October I tasted three of Mondavi's more renowned Cabernet Sauvignons. The 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has consistently been a 90 point wine. It remains a beautiful Cabernet, displaying cedar, tobacco, and black currant fruit. Medium to full-bodied and fully mature, with sweet ripeness on the attack, excellent purity, and a long, supple finish, this wine should keep for another 7-10 years.

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
