Having established his namesake winery in 1966 with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi is unequivocally an icon of American wine. The 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is an exceptional release with alluringly complex layers of sweet black fruits, sous bois, graphite, vanilla and liquorice. A superb wine of delicious concentration, moderate tannins and a wonderfully long, elegant finish.
93 Vinous
(14.6% alcohol; 50% To Kalon): Bright, dark red. Lively aromas of cassis, violet and graphite suggest a juicy wine. Boasts terrific claret-like intensity and cut to its flavors of currant, tobacco, minerals, spices and leather; there's a noble rusticity to this wine, which is distinctly Old World in style. Not especially fleshy--especially following the 2002--but finishes with superb cut, soil-driven salinity and length. The serious tannins are still tight. Interestingly, winemaker Janssens views 2001 as a powerful vintage for the Mondavi Reserve. This wine has good acidity but was also the highest vintage in pH (3.76) at the time.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2016

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
