Having founded his namesake winery in 1966 with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi is considered by many as one of the most important figures in American wine. The 1999 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a tasty release with elegant notes of cassis, mulberry, crushed minerals and lightly toasty oak. It is medium-bodied, lightly tannic and exudes superb concentration of fruit throughout.

Healthy dark red. Musky aromas of dark raspberry, sexy oak, cocoa powder, cured tobacco and leather. Not hugely fleshy or sweet but velvety and fine-grained, offering an attractive balance of sweet fruit and herbal elements. In the distinctly European style of the vintage, showing lovely energy, clarity and cut. Finishes suave and firm, with a broad dusting of tannins and very good subtle length. Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
