Having founded his namesake winery in 1966 with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi is considered by many as one of the most important figures in American wine. The 1995 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a dense, detailed and delicious wine with wonderful multi-layered character. Perhaps marginally less intense than the statuesque 1990, 91 or 94, this has all the quintessential richness and exuberance of fruit so typical of Napa reds.
92 Vinous
(13.5% alcohol): Full medium red. Sexy aromas of plum, spices, mocha and cedary cigar box, plus a whiff of meat. Plush, rich and sweet, with lovely currant and plum fruit lifted by bright herbs and spices and hint of caraway seed. Finishes with a firm dusting of tannins and noteworthy flavor authority and grip. One of the healthiest and most youthful 1995s in the tasting, offering very good concentration, palate coverage and energy. Finishes impressively ripe and long.Stephen Tanzer1st June 2016

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
