Many consider Robert Mondavi to be one of the most important figures in American wine. In 1966 he founded his namesake winery with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines. He selected the To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery and this hallowed first-growth-equivalent vineyard, located in Oakville, is known for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world. The 1987 is a sensational release with decadent and dense notes of cassis, woodsmoke, dried herbs, earth and mint. An astonishing wine that should be approaching its peak drinking phase.
90 Vinous
(retasted at Mondavi) Very good full medium ruby. Currant, black cherry, roast coffee, cedar, leather, tobacco, truffle and black olive on the flamboyant nose. Sappy, youthfully tight flavors of currant and tobacco leaf, with a faint gamey nuance. Very ripe and rich but adamantly dry. Strong finish features big, ripe tannins. A superb bottle, far closer in character to my memory of this wine than the more politely styled example shown at the group tasting.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2002

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
