Having founded his namesake winery in 1966 with the aim of creating world-class Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi is considered by many as one of the most important figures in American wine. The 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply concentrated and sumptuously textured release with classical notes of cassis, cedar, liquorice, smoke and bay leaf. Though requiring some time in a decanter to truly open up, this is a wonderful wine approaching its apogee.
92 Vinous
(15.9% alcohol; 93% from To Kalon vineyard fruit): Dark red-ruby. Very expressive, ripe, slightly inky aromas of blueberry, camphor and licorice, plus a hint of sweet butter; distinctly warm but not roasted. Wonderfully concentrated and deep if a bit unrefined; a real fleshpot of fruit but this still needs time to burn off some of its baby fat and reveal its dark berries and minerals underneath. Finishes chewy, deep and very long, with big, slightly tough tannins. Will additional bottle aging bring more elegance? Give this a long spell in a decanter if you plan to uncork a bottle anytime soon. This bottle was way better than the one I tasted as part of a vertical tasting of this wine in 2016.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2017

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
