Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon 1996 is a mature red wine from the Oakville estate that helped put Napa Valley on the global map. The 1996 vintage was characterised by a long, cool growing season, resulting in a wine with exceptional balance and structural integrity. Now fully mature, it offers a sophisticated bouquet of cedar, tobacco and dried blackcurrants, reflecting the estate’s signature style of blending power with classical restraint. On the palate, the tannins have become wonderfully silky and integrated, while the fruit remains vibrant and deep. It is a testament to Robert Mondavi’s vision of producing Napa Cabernet that could age as gracefully as the finest Bordeaux.

Full red-ruby. Slightly roasted aromas of plum, cherry, cassis, leather, mocha and earth. Sweet, fat, full and generous in the mouth; this will offer satisfying early drinking. Finishes with dusty tannins and notes of redcurrant, smoke and leather.Stephen Tanzer1st May 1999

Robert Mondavi Winery

The Father of Fine Wine in Napa

It's hard to overstate the influence of Robert Mondavi in Napa. Founding his eponymous winery in 1966, Mondavi worked tirelessly to promote the world class terroir of California and the high quality fruit they could produce - particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery produce bottlings at all levels - from every day table wine to some of the world's greatest reds. In 1978, Robert Mondavi teamed up with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of Château Mouton Rothschild, to create Opus One - a collaborative venture that aimed to establish a Bordeaux style Grand Vin in Napa.

Currently the chief winemaker is Geneviève Janssens, a French born oenologist with a formidable pedigree. The wines are bold and full, but still look back to the Old World for inspiration - expect structure and elegance alongside ripe and vibrant fruit character. The standard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve both deserve a place in the cellar of any serious collector and have a proven track record of ageing for decades.
