Comtes Lafon Meursault Perrières 2012 is a mature -vintage Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Perrières in the Meursault appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a leading wine producer based in Meursault, where it has holdings in some of the most prestigious vineyards. The estate is led by fourth-generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid-1980s. This 2012 bottling is produced using Chardonnay fruit from Les Perrières, one of the most prized 1er Crus in Meursault. "The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres comes from two parcels in the north and the south of the climat. It has a more nuanced bouquet after the Charmes with delicate walnut and mineral notes that need some encouragement. The palate exhibits very good weight with rounded spicy fruit, citrus peel, walnut and smoke with a long, peacock`s tail on the finish that reasserts its position as the most propitious premier cru." Slightly fuller yellow than the 2014. Very ripe yellow peach, orange blossom, ginger and pineapple dominate the nose, which comes across as a bit less salty and dry than the '14. Then wonderfully silky in the mouth and thicker than the '14; also quite dry, with its fatness and touch of sweetness perfectly leavened by--and also nicely buffering--a thread of lemony acidity. This is lower in acidity than the '14 but it also has a lower pH. Can't quite match the '14 in inner-mouth perfume, complexity or lift but aeration brought outstanding depth and flavor complexity, and the dry, rich, classic finish boasts palate-staining citrussy length. Give this at least another couple years in the cellar to harmonize and gain in complexity. (just 18 hectoliters per hectare produced; 4.3 g/l acidity; 3.16 pH)Stephen Tanzer1st December 2019

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
