Meursault Perrières Comtes Lafon 1995 is a definitive expression from this Premier Cru, defined by a structural foundation of high acidity and taut mineral concentration derived from the vineyard`s shallow, pure limestone soils. The 1995 Burgundy vintage yielded classically structured wines. This wine`s structure is built for immense longevity, showcasing profound tension and textural density.

The Meursault Les Perrieres has deep mineral and earth tones in the nose, and toasty, nutty, iron flavors in the mouth. Powerful and full-bodied, it possesses great length and balance. Drink it between 2000-2010. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. Ratings with a range of scores in parentheses indicate the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. - Pierre Rovani

Full, bright yellow with a gold tinge. Fruit-driven scents of orange zest and ripe pineapple suggest an edge of botrytis without quite going honeyed. Mouthfilling without being weighty, this wonderfully rich, ripe and delicious wine boasts a refined texture that reminded me of Lafon's most recent vintages. The very long, slowly building finish is classic, tactile and gripping, showing a serious stony quality and lovely lingering perfume. This would be a perfect match with scallops. Lafon told me he loves this vintage (he also sold too many bottles and has very little left), and at the time he considered it his best since the '89. As in 2010, he picked the grapes earlier than he had anticipated owing to rainfall shortly before the harvest. This was the year I learned that you have to rush to pick after a storm, he told me. I could drink this wine all day. (just 23 hectoliters per hectare produced owing to a poor flowering)Stephen Tanzer1st December 2019

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
