Michel Coutoux is the son-in-law of Michel Niellon, long-time proprietor of Domaine Michel Niellon in Chassagne-Montrachet. Coutoux has made Niellon’s wines for some time, but Coutoux has also opened a négociant business under his name. This release comes from ‘Les Genevrières’, a Premier Cru of the Meursault appellation where Coutoux sources grapes from local growers. The 1999 vintage is a mature and complex wine, revealing notes of orchard fruits, toasted nuts, and a dash of honey.

Aromatic nose features dried apricot and substantial but well-integrated oak. Big, rich and pliant, and already showing considerable middle-palate flavor. Seems clearly sweeter, and showier, than most of Coutoux other '99s at this stage, but will benefit from a couple years of additional patience. Still, the 2000 may turn out to be even better. Finishes ripe and persistent.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2001
