Henri Boillot is one of the hottest names in Burgundy right now, enjoying an extraordinary reputation for the sheer quality of his wines. Produced from their Meursault-based winery, they are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. The Meursault Premier Cru ‘Les Charmes’ is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 50% new. The 2005 vintage is in a great spot right now, lush and viscous, with notes of yellow fruit, citrus, toasted marshmallow and oak spice.

(negociant wine) Cool aromas of citrus fruits and stone. Dense, concentrated and sappy, with sweet citrus and mineral flavors firmed by surprisingly sound acidity. A classic Charmes with terrific inner-mouth energy. Finishes long and brisk, with excellent cut.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2007

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
