Comtes Lafon Meursault Charmes 1999 is a medium-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Bouchères in the Meursault appellation of the Côte de Beaune. With a rich history that goes back to the 1860s, Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a well-established wine producer based in Meursault. The estate is currently managed by fourth-generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father Réné in the mid-1980s. This cuvée hails from the prized Meursault 1er Cru of Les Charmes. "This is still firing on all cylinders and hasn`t missed a beat since it was released. The expressive if now fully mature nose still explodes from the glass offering mildly toasty peach and apricot aromas that give way to rich, thick, relatively dense medium-bodied flavours that possess good minerality on the lingering finish that retains fine intensity and excellent length. For my taste, this is drinking perfectly now though if well-stored, it should continue to do so for at least another decade." Burghound, 2010

Highly nuanced, musky nose combines lemon, truffle and toasty, charred oak. Big, rich and vibrant; already wonderfully aromatic in the mouth. A large-scaled, layered wine that unfolds slowly and lingers long on the aftertaste. The old-vines component of this wine featured a full 13.8% alcohol with a low pH of 3.18.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2001

Talcum powder, perfume, and flowers can be discerned in the aromatics of the 1999 Meursault Les Charmes. Medium-bodied and silky, it offers toast, mineral, white currant, and crisp pear flavors. It is tangy, flavorful, extremely well-balanced, and graceful. This wine also boasts an admirably long, smooth finish. Drink it over the next 7-9 years. - Pierre Rovani

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
