Masseto is the highly sought-after Italian wine produced by Tenuta dell`Ornellaia. It is a single-vineyard, 100% Merlot wine, made from grapes grown in a small 7-hectare vineyard with unique terroir. The vineyard`s blue clay soils and microclimate contribute to the wine`s exceptional quality and distinct character. Masseto 2001 exhibits a deep, opaque colour and a complex nose, with aromas of ripe black fruit, such as blackberries and black cherries, as well as hints of chocolate, spice, and earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is rich, concentrated and well-structured, with velvety tannins and a long, persistent finish. This vintage is known for its balance and elegance, which have allowed it to age gracefully over the years.
The 2001 Masseto is one of the all-time great wines here. Vertical and soaring in its intensity, the 2001 occupies all dimensions, especially texturally, where it is so rich, so heady and so compelling. Next to other wines, or other vintages, the 2001 just has more of everything. I imagine well-stored bottles will drink well for another 15-20 years. The 2001’s reputation as an iconic wine is clearly justified. This magical vintage was marked by cooling temperatures in September that resulted in a drawn out harvest that took four weeks to complete. Note: The bottle in the Nashville tasting was not perfect, so this note corresponds to a more recent and more representative example. Clearly shows the ageing capacity of Masseo, as well as the sheer pleasure to be found. So easy to love, brambled, generous, earthy, concentrated, fleshy raspberry and blackberry fruits without excess. Oyster shell and gunsmoke, softening to still-warm embers. Just delicious. This is the moment to share this wine. When you go back to it after an hour in the glass, its nuances are even more evident. A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan
A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.
