Sumptuous opulence and polished elegance from the 1998 vintage. A warm summer yielded a powerful, concentrated Masseto, one of amazing character. Density, breadth, and depth of fruit are all well-supported by a superbly-supple mass of tannins, giving the wine an overwhelming impression of solidity and youthfulness.

A dark, seamless beauty, the 1998 Masseto is off the charts. This is such a remarkable bottle. At twenty years of age, the 1998 is still very young, but its exotic beauty and sheer opulence make it such a pleasure to drink and taste on this evening. The very hot, dry year yielded a sumptuous, bold wine with tons of depth that really emerges with time in the glass. What a wine!Antonio Galloni1st January 2020

A moment when people sat up and took notice of Masseto, and saw its personality was clearly different from the rest of Tuscany. Graphite, intense spice, red pepper, black olives and chocolate shavings, velvety tannins still with clear density at 23 years old. A brilliant choice for drinking now. This was a dry summer, with a cool harvest that meant Sangiovese in the rest of Tuscany struggled with full ripeness, but on Masseto's site, and with the Merlot grape, they were able to achieve this rich fruit character. A point of reference for the estate, and a real privilege to taste at this point. 100% new oak.Jane Anson7th December 2021

Masseto

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
