Masseto 1992 is a renowned Merlot from the celebrated Tenuta dell’Ornellaia estate, located within the Bolgheri appellation. The vineyard`s unique terroir features deep blue clay soils interspersed with gravel and sand, creating an ideal environment for Merlot cultivation. The natural slope and proximity to the coast contribute to its finely defined microclimate. The winemaking process includes hand-harvested grapes, careful sorting, fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and ageing in French oak barrels. Produced in limited quantities, Masseto has established itself as a benchmark for Italian wines, with its 1992 vintage showcasing the vineyard’s distinct character.

The 1992 is an attractive, early Masseto from a challenging year that benefits from the magnum format. There is good depth for a wine of its age, if not quite the finesse the estate would find later. Sweet red cherry, red plum, raspberry and floral notes give the 1992 a real feeling of brightness that is hugely appealing. Harvest took place between September 5 and 12, on the earlier side, but it was a year with some disease pressure.Antonio Galloni1st January 2020

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
