Masseto 1990 is a single-vineyard Merlot from Bolgheri, Tuscany, renowned for its unique blue clay soils. Produced by the prestigious Tenuta dell`Ornellaia, this wine originates from a vintage that experienced optimal growing conditions. The wine showcases an intense ruby-garnet hue with subtle brick highlights. Aromas present complexities of dried red cherry and earthy undertones, alongside elements of tobacco and truffle. On the palate, it reveals a robust framework of ripe fruit and finely integrated tannins, reflecting the vineyard`s terroir and potential for further evolution.

The 1990 Masseto is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of a vintage that yielded so many flamboyant reds. Now fully mature, the 1990 offers up an enticing mélange of blood orange, tobacco, mint, dried herbs, pipe tobacco and cedar. I would prefer to drink it over the next few years, as there is no upside to be had from cellaring bottles at this point. Tonight, the 1990 is positively stellar. The 1990 spent 14 months in barrel, normal for the era. Antonio Galloni1st January 2020

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
