Masseto 1989 is a striking representation of this esteemed single-vineyard red wine from Bolgheri, Tuscany. Crafted from Merlot grapes, this vintage reflects the unique characteristics of its origin, with grapes sourced exclusively from the iconic 7-hectare Masseto vineyard, situated on blue clay soils. The 1989 offering reveals a complex bouquet of dark cherry and plum, complemented by notes of chocolate, tobacco and an earthy minerality. On the palate, it showcases concentrated flavours, accompanied by firm tannins and balanced acidity. Masseto is produced by Tenuta dell`Ornellaia, a pioneering Tuscan winery established in 1981.

The 1989 Masseto can be a very fine bottle, but, alas, that is not the case tonight. Our bottle is frayed and falling apart, which is a real shame. The 1989 spent less time in barrel than most vintages, but it's hard to draw any meaningful conclusions given the state of this bottle. I have had better examples.

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
