Massetino 2023’s bouquet is already very pleasant. The fresh and intoxicating red fruit accompanying the first sip clearly conveys the potential of this vintage. Merlot and Cabernet Franc merge on the palate, exalting the wine’s concentration. This Massetino reflects the characteristics of the vintage: juiciness and length persist throughout the tasting, ending with a slight tangy note.

This curls out of the glass with woodsmoke and campfire, totally delicious, so juicy and fragrant. Fruit forward with red cherry, plump raspberries, creamy cappuccino and liquorice, great quality and easy to love. The 2023 Massetino is an attractive and expressive wine. Medium in body, the 2023 offers up an attractive mix of dark plum, mocha, new leather, cedar and espresso. Time in the glass brings out pretty floral and spice top notes. The oak and extraction feel just a bit pushed for the wine's mid-weight structure. The 2023 was done in a period of transition with technical teams and winemakers, and that is evident in this particular vintage. Antonio Galloni26th June 2025

91% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc. A ‘challenging year’ with a very wet spring and rains again at the end of August. 100% destemmed. Malo and 12 months of ageing in barriques, 50% new, followed by blending and four months’ further ageing in concrete tank before bottling.Deeper than the Caiarossa 2022. Very fragrant and super-polished sweet tannins. Already a good drink. With only a little heat on the end. (JR)

Masseto

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
