The ‘second wine’ of Masseto, following in the footsteps of its big brother, Massetino was born in the 2017 vintage with a market launch in October 2019. It’s a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc and deep ruby red in colour. Quite earthy on the nose, with pronounced aromas of ripe red berries. Very plummy with a touch of creaminess. On the palate, rich cherry fruit and a hint of chocolate. Tannins are soft and the finish rounded.

The 2018 Massetino, here in its second release, picks up where the 2017 left off. Let’s start with what is plainly obvious. Massetino, the second wine of Masseto, is more complex and nuanced than most flagship wines in Tuscany’s Maremma. The 2018 beautifully balances energy, aromatic depth and fruit intensity. Mocha, cedar, leather, licorice and blackberry jam all run through the 2018, infusing it with notable complexity. The purity of the fruit is just striking. Once again, the Franc is such a strong and distinctive marker. I loved it. The 2018 spent 15 months in oak and a month in tank prior to bottling.Antonio Galloni1st January 2021

The first vintage to be sold through the Bordeaux Place. 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. One of the wettest springs in Masseto’s history, with high temperatures in April. Rapid growth led to advanced flowering and progression in the vines, creating disease pressure. A warm and slightly wet August gave more moderate alcohols and larger berry sizes than normal.Deep ruby. Quite earthy, with immediate ripe red-berry fruit on the nose. Very plummy with just a hint of creaminess. Rich fruit on the palate, but soft in tannin. Perfect for a `second wine`, with that fleshy cherry fruit and a hint of chocolate. A little warm on the back end. A spherical, approachable but long wine. (TP)

Masseto

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
