Vinous
Bright, saturated ruby-red. Musky aromas of cola, cedar, roasted herbs, minerals, leather, shoe polish and eucalyptus. Dense but quite dry in the middle palate, with firm-edged flavors of cherry skin, coffee and milk chocolate, dried by the wine's strong oakiness. Finishes with strong tannins that will require years to harmonize. Very difficult to taste today. (An earlier bottle had a nose dominated by cassis, minerals, exotic baking spices and sassafras; a sweetly oaky palate with strong spice and rooty flavors; and major tongue-dusting oak tannins that also dried the finish.) Today I find more evidence of primary fruit in the estate's regular release, but both of these wines will require patience. Stephen Tanzer1st March 2004
