Marquis de Terme is a fourth-growth Margaux estate blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, and the 2012 is an approachable, well-made example from a solid rather than spectacular vintage. Floral, black cherry, plum and tobacco aromas lead into a round, fleshy palate of ripe black fruit and dark chocolate, with soft, well-judged tannins. It is a supple, food-friendly claret that doesn`t demand years in the cellar, making it a good option for drinking over the next five to eight years. Try it with roast duck or lamb.

Soft tannins, roses and crème caramel, butterscotch and white pepper spice, alongside crushed raspberry and cranberry. Natural yeast for fermentation, Diam cork, 50% new oak for ageing, a late harvest from October 9 to 18, one of the latest on record, which saved what had been a very rainy growing season. The 2012 Marquis de Terme has a light nose that feels slightly scalped, although I'm unsure if it is TCA. The palate is medium-bodied and quite austere, missing the depth of the 2011 with a somewhat austere finish. It doesn't quite click into fifth gear, and I feel there are superior vintages from this era. Neal Martin8th October 2024
