Château Margaux 1966 is a Left Bank Bordeaux from the illustrious First Growth of Château Margaux, the leading property from the appellation of the same name. Renowned for their perfumed elegance, the wines of Château Margaux also possess a subtle power, an extraordinary silky texture and profound longevity. This grand vin is from the 1966 vintage, a noteworthy Bordeaux vintage that produced many long-lived wines. This bottle has a damaged capsule and is therefore unsuitable for shipping. "Dry and fresh. Racy and transparent. Long and reverberant. Not from Margaux`s most glorious era but a very good bottle." Jancis Robinson MW, 2013

Though the First Growth's fortunes were beginning to wane under the Ginestet family, the 1966 Château Margaux has been delightful both times that I have been acquainted. Rather distant and almost Pauillac-like on the nose, it offers light graphite and tobacco scents. Like many wines from this vintage, the palate is medium-bodied and austere, yet it is balanced and fresher than other vintage of this era. Tasted April 2012. Neal Martin1st September 2023

This has always been one of the best examples of Margaux during its period of mediocrity. Too light for a wine of first-growth standards, it has continued to exhibit some of the fabulous fragrance for which Margaux is famous. Soft, round, fruity flavors are suggestive of herbs, cedar, mushrooms, plums, and caramel. Fully mature, this wine should be drunk up. Anticipated maturity: Now. A Legacy of Fine Wine

Château Margaux is one of the most striking constructions in the Bordeaux appellation, a large grand house built in the early 18th century on an estate that has been producing fine wine for hundreds of years, with a history dating back to the 12th century Bordeaux wine tradition. Quality was known to fluctuate in the first half of the 20th century, but that period of inconsistency ended with the arrival of wunderkind Paul Pontallier, a talented winemaker who worked nearly 35 vintages and produced some of the greatest wines in living memory. Paul passed on in 2016, and the team is now led by Philippe Bascaules and Sebastien Vergne, with consultancy from Eric Boissenot.

82 hectares are dedicated to red wine vines, with around 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Château Margaux produces around 30,000 cases of wine annually, with the Grand Vin accounting for around 35% of that total. Among their celebrated wines is Pavillon Rouge, the second wine of the estate, which stands as a testament to the estate's commitment to quality.

In addition to their renowned red wines, Château Margaux also produces a limited quantity of Sauvignon Blanc, adding another layer to their esteemed collection of Margaux wines. This white wine complements their offerings and demonstrates the estate’s versatility.
