Marcassin Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay 1998 is crafted from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from the estate vineyard in Sonoma Coast, California. Founded by Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer, Marcassin is known for its meticulous viticulture. This wine is produced from low-yield, densely planted vines grown in a cool maritime climate. Following harvest, the grapes are whole-cluster pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, and aged for approximately 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The wine showcases an intricate balance of flavours, suggesting ripe apples and subtle minerality, alongside the influence of oak.

Fairly bright color. Youthfully disjointed nose combines lime, oatmeal, roasted nuts and a petrolly suggestion of wet stone. Then rich and full in the mouth; the most tactile and concentrated of these '98 chardonnays, but showing more nuts and stones than primary fruit today. I don't currently find the characteristic clarity of flavor of chardonnay from this site, but the wine has noteworthy complexity and a strong spine for aging.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2002
