Malescot St Exupery 2016 is a Third Growth Margaux blending 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. The 2016 vintage is renowned for its incredible density and aromatic complexity, featuring notes of blackcurrant, violets and incense. Grown on deep gravel beds over a marl subsoil, this wine possesses a significant structural core, yet the tannins are remarkably polished and fine. Winemaker Jean-Luc Zuger utilised 70% new French oak to frame the intense fruit, resulting in a wine that is both opulent and classically proportioned. It stands as a profound Margaux with decades of potential, defined by its haunting aromatics and persistent mineral finish.

The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry has a well-defined bouquet of ample red currant, cranberry and strawberry fruit laced with rose petal and hints of graphite. There is something almost Saint Julien–like about the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, graphite-infused black fruit, and quite linear and poised, but it conveys a genuine sense of energy and tension toward the classic finish. A magnificent Margaux.Neal Martin1st January 2019

Quite gamey and savoury on the nose. Then rather strung out and austere on the palate. Doesn’t hang together. This bottle anyway is a disappointment in the context of the vintage. Austere. (JR)
