Located in the village of Quitaine, Domaine de la Bongran is a family-owned estate covering approximately 15 hectares, planted entirely to Chardonnay. This particular cuvée is made with botrytised grapes, which have reached the stage known as ‘noble rot’. On the nose, expect notes of lavender, honey, dried apricots and crème brûlée. The palate is rich and lively, combining tropical fruits, honey and caramel, all tempered by a refreshing acidity. Absolutely glorious.

The 1994 Viré-Clessé Cuvée Botrytis is a vintage that I have a sentimental attachment to since I remember Jean Thevenet giving me a bottle on my last visit, which I then served blind to astonished diners at a Burgundy dinner in London. It has a clean, deep amber colour. The nose is very intense with marmalade, fig and a touch of melted wax, perhaps not quite as defined as the ‘06 but still quite formidable. The palate is as good as ever. Viscous, amazingly concentrated, the 300g/l residual sugar is cunningly disguised by the killer line of acidity. It has tremendous weight and tension with notes of marmalade, fig, Seville oranges, cardomom and apricots. The finish has lost none of its energy in the intervening years. Simply wonderful.
