From the 1961 vintage, this Macallan follows the house style of the period closely, with dried fruit, orange marmalade and old oak, soft spice and a gently nutty, rounded palate that builds slowly across the tongue. The finish is warm, mellow and satisfyingly long. Scarce and historically interesting rather than showy, this is a bottle for the serious collector, offering an authentic taste of Macallan`s blending-era character.

Fine and Rare

One of Scotland's most iconic distilleries, the Macallan is situated on a huge 390 acre estate near the town of Craigellachie in Speyside. Founded in 1824, Macallan was one of the first Scottish distilleries to receive their license to legally distil whisky. Water is drawn from natural springs on the grounds of the estate and the team run 12 wash stills and 24 spirits stills - quite a number, but its worth remembering that Macallan operate some of the smallest stills in Scotland, a key contributor to their signature style of single malt.

Macallan are well known for their use of ex-Sherry casks to age their spirit, something they take great care in sourcing directly from Jerez de la Frontera. The barrels contribute complexity, depth of flavour and top notes of dried fruits and toasted nuts. When it comes to bottlings, there is quite a selection - from the core range to long discontinued limited editions. Independent bottlings are also available from Gordon and MacPhail, Signatory, That Boutique-y Whisky Company and beyond.
