Following on from the 1995 and 1996 vintages, Louis Roederer released Cristal Vinothèque 1999 in October 2020. The wines are the result of 20 years of bespoke ageing in three successive stages by Cellar Master Jean-Baptiste. The nose combines citrus fruits, roasted hazelnuts and freshly baked pastries. The palate is captivating and smooth, with distinctive notes of candied citrus fruits, oriental spices and vanilla. More Cristal than ever.

The 1999 Cristal Vinothèque is bright, fresh and wonderfully nuanced. Tasted next to the original release, it shows a bit more freshness and also greater vinous intensity. Tangerine oil, spice, crushed flowers and dried herbs linger. Dosage is 7 grams per liter, as opposed to 9 for the original release. I especially admire its clarity and verve. “It’s the first vintage in which I introduced jetting to remove oxygen in the headspace at bottling. Now I do this on all Cristal,” Lécaillon adds. Cristal

The Czar's Cuvée

Produced by the celebrated Champagne house, Louis Roederer, and with a history spanning over two centuries, Cristal is the pinnacle of the House’s production and is only made in the finest vintages. First commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to create a special personal cuvée, Cristal was reintroduced by the House in 1924 as the first prestige cuvée Champagne.

Only produced during the best years, Cristal is a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement. A wonderfully vibrant and forward Champagne in youth, mature examples offer a complex, layered experience similar to that of a fine white Burgundy.
