The ultimate ‘Prestige Cuvée’, Cristal was first created at the request of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1876, who approached Louis Roederer to make him an exclusive champagne from their finest grapes. Cristal is produced in the very finest vintages and only released after a minimum six years of ageing. The 1974 vintage was the first release of a rosé Cristal, almost 200 years after the very first classic cuvée. The 1995 is drinking very well now, suggesting notes of crushed strawberries, rose petals, floral elements and a touch of nougat.

The 1995 Cristal Rosé (Late Disgorged) is an excellent choice for drinking now, as it has pretty much reached the point where further improvement in the cellar is unlikely. At the same time, the 1995 shows no signs of fading; rather it gives the impression it will stay at this plateau for at least a handful of years, and likely longer. The flavors are bold and direct in a powerful yet slightly compact Cristal Rosé built on length. Orange peel, sweet red stone fruits, cinnamon, hazelnut and coffee add the final layers of nuance. Served alongside the superb 2008 and much more orange (it was a botrytis year). Made before Lécaillon's winemaking system was in place (in fact, although he arrived at Roederer in 1989, he wasn't in charge of winemaking until 1999). Dosage 12 g/l. Magnum.
Sweet and rich but without the zest and structure of the 2008. Clearly quite evolved and chunky – more brutal than the 2008. (JR)Jancis Robinson3rd October 2024

Cristal

The Czar's Cuvée

Produced by the celebrated Champagne house, Louis Roederer, and with a history spanning over two centuries, Cristal is the pinnacle of the House’s production and is only made in the finest vintages. First commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to create a special personal cuvée, Cristal was reintroduced by the House in 1924 as the first prestige cuvée Champagne.

Only produced during the best years, Cristal is a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement. A wonderfully vibrant and forward Champagne in youth, mature examples offer a complex, layered experience similar to that of a fine white Burgundy.
