Louis Roederer Cristal 1994 is a prestige-cuvée vintage Champagne that showcases the distinct characteristics of this esteemed Champagne house, established in 1776. This vintage is composed of a blend primarily featuring Pinot Noir (approximately 60%) and Chardonnay (around 40%), sourced from the house`s own Grand Cru vineyards. Notably, the grapes benefit from the region`s chalky soils, specifically those of the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. Fermentation occurs primarily in neutral oak foudres and the Champagne is aged on its lees for an extended period before release. Expect notes of citrus, white fruits and subtle nuttiness on the palate, underpinned by a balanced structure.

Pale peach skin color. Aromas of ginger apple, caramel, cinnamon and crystallized ginger. Full, round and concentrated; thick and strong in extract. Rather full dosage nicely leavened by firm acidity. Finishes tactile and long, with a note of honeyed apple. I began with a 90-point score for this wine but marked it down as it quickly took on the cooked apple aspect of '94 with aeration. Not nearly as fresh as the '93 version. Cristal

The Czar's Cuvée

Produced by the celebrated Champagne house, Louis Roederer, and with a history spanning over two centuries, Cristal is the pinnacle of the House’s production and is only made in the finest vintages. First commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to create a special personal cuvée, Cristal was reintroduced by the House in 1924 as the first prestige cuvée Champagne.

Only produced during the best years, Cristal is a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement. A wonderfully vibrant and forward Champagne in youth, mature examples offer a complex, layered experience similar to that of a fine white Burgundy.
