Founded in 1776 and still under family ownership, Louis Roederer is perhaps most famous for its prestige cuvée, Cristal. The single-estate champagne has long been a favourite among high-profile personalities, in particular in the US. Between 20-30% of the wines are vinified in oak barrels and the final assemblage is matured for six years, followed by a 12-month period of rest for after disgorgement. The 1999 vintage is a blend of 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay. It’s a superbly well-balanced expression, brimming with notes of hazelnuts, apricots and apples.

The 1999 Cristal is very pretty. It’s a rare Cristal vintage with a bit more Chardonnay than the norm. Apricot, spice, ginger, hazelnut and exotic tropical fruits all open with some aeration. The 1999 shows good depth and density, but it is hard to get past some of the angular contours that remain. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Disgorged: 2006.Antonio Galloni6th December 2023

Cristal

The Czar's Cuvée

Produced by the celebrated Champagne house, Louis Roederer, and with a history spanning over two centuries, Cristal is the pinnacle of the House’s production and is only made in the finest vintages. First commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to create a special personal cuvée, Cristal was reintroduced by the House in 1924 as the first prestige cuvée Champagne.

Only produced during the best years, Cristal is a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement. A wonderfully vibrant and forward Champagne in youth, mature examples offer a complex, layered experience similar to that of a fine white Burgundy.
