First created by Louis Roederer for Tsar Alexander II in 1876, Cristal eventually hit the commercial market for champagne lovers in 1945. Cristal is instantly recognisable in its eye-catching yellow-orange cellophane which protects the clear-bottled wine from damaging sun rays. This release is the 1999 vintage, a blend of 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay sourced exclusively from grand cru vineyards. The wine spent 14 years on the lees and was disgorged in 2011. A timeless expression, offering layers of toastiness balanced by an impressive amount of fruit and freshness.

The 1995 Cristal (Late Disgorged) is fascinating to taste, as it is quite different in style from the original release. Because of the extra three years or so on the lees, the 1995 Cristal (Late Disgorged) has picked up a reductive note that is not typical of Cristal. Scents of lime, crushed rock, lemon and slate gradually open up in the glass. The 1995 remains taut and chiseled, with crystalline purity and exceptional overall balance. The wine feels wonderfully alive as it tempts all of the senses with its compelling personality. This is a superb showing from Roederer. Antonio Galloni1st July 2015

Cristal

The Czar's Cuvée

Produced by the celebrated Champagne house, Louis Roederer, and with a history spanning over two centuries, Cristal is the pinnacle of the House’s production and is only made in the finest vintages. First commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to create a special personal cuvée, Cristal was reintroduced by the House in 1924 as the first prestige cuvée Champagne.

Only produced during the best years, Cristal is a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, aged for six years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further eight months after dégorgement. A wonderfully vibrant and forward Champagne in youth, mature examples offer a complex, layered experience similar to that of a fine white Burgundy.
