The Littlemill 31 Year Old Connoisseurs Choice, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in 2022, is a highly prized single malt Scotch whisky from the long-closed Littlemill distillery in the Lowlands of Scotland. Littlemill has a storied history, often cited as one of Scotland`s oldest licensed distilleries, though it was sadly demolished in 2004 following a fire. This particular expression, likely distilled in 1991 given the age, was matured in a refill hogshead, allowing the distillery`s unique character to shine through after over three decades. Expect a profile that balances the classic Lowland lightness with a remarkable depth gained from age, often featuring notes of key lime pie, apple strudel and hay on the nose, leading to a palate of spearmint, charred oak and peppercorns.

A Ghostly Lowlander

Littlemill is rumoured to be built on one of the oldest distilling sites in Europe, with suggestions that spirit might have been produced there as long ago as the 14th century. The distillery as we recognise it today was founded in 1772 by George Buchanan and was operated by various owners with some periods of closure until it finally stopped making whisky for good in 1994. During its life, Littlemill produced whisky in the traditional Lowland style, triple distilling its spirit, while also experimenting with double distillation and both peated and non-peated expressions.

A number of post-closure official editions are available alongside a selection of independent bottlings from the likes of Hunter Laing and Hart Brothers.
