Littlemill Distillery has a long history that dates back to 1772, making it one of Scotland`s oldest distilleries. It went through various periods of operation and ownership changes over the years. Unfortunately, the distillery faced several challenges, including fires and economic difficulties, which ultimately led to its closure. The final chapter of Littlemill Distillery`s history occurred in 1996 when it was completely destroyed by a fire. As a result, the distillery was not rebuilt, and its whisky production came to an end. Bottled in 2013 by the Silver Seal Whisky Company, this 23-year-old expression hails from a single cask hogshead, resulting in just 290 bottles.

A Ghostly Lowlander

Littlemill is rumoured to be built on one of the oldest distilling sites in Europe, with suggestions that spirit might have been produced there as long ago as the 14th century. The distillery as we recognise it today was founded in 1772 by George Buchanan and was operated by various owners with some periods of closure until it finally stopped making whisky for good in 1994. During its life, Littlemill produced whisky in the traditional Lowland style, triple distilling its spirit, while also experimenting with double distillation and both peated and non-peated expressions.

A number of post-closure official editions are available alongside a selection of independent bottlings from the likes of Hunter Laing and Hart Brothers.
