Château Les Charmes Haut Brion is an estate situated in Pessac-Léognan and has, since 2010, benefitted significantly from the investment in renovation and replanting undertaken by new owner, Patrice Pichet. From the superb 2016 vintage, this is a brilliant release composed of 41% Cabernet Franc, 39% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium-bodied and vibrant, it has wonderfully intense notes of warm blackcurrants, spring flowers and graphite.

Tasted in such a starry and impressive lineup, Carmes holds its own, and also shows how it stands apart. Sill austere at the 10 year mark, with cranberry and cherry pit alongside iris and peony fragrance, a ton of cocoa bean and liquorice, less generous than perhaps I was expecting, but sculpted, powerful, full of vivid life and crushed dried herbs. Guillaume Pouthier director, 25% new oak, 5% oak casks, and 10% amphoras, with a portion of whole-bunch vinification.Jane Anson4th February 2026

The 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has quite a backward nose that opens nicely in the glass: blackberry, red brick/gravel, touches of undergrowth emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fleshy and ripe, with good backbone. Weighty on the finish, with white pepper and bay leaf on the aftertaste, this is a very fine Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting in London. Neal Martin16th April 2026

The 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 41% Cabernet Franc, 39% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 65% new and 35% one-year-old oak for 22 months. This vintage represents one of the largest percentages of Cabernet Franc for this wine. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives notes of kirsch, black raspberries and black plums with touches of cassis, violets, chocolate box and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, grainy and lively with loads of layers and a long, well-poised finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown30th November 2018
