Château Léoville Poyferré 1995 presents a wine of significant density and structure. This vintage is characterised by concentrated layers of blackcurrant, ripe plum and hints of cedar. As with other vintages, it displays a certain restraint, showcasing minerality and a subtle, earthy backbone. Tannins are prominent, suggesting a lengthy ageing potential. The estate, classified as Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is known for its meticulous vineyard practices and commitment to crafting complex wines. This vintage will benefit from further cellaring to fully reveal its intricacies.
90 Vinous
Deep ruby-red. Bright, enticing aromas of redcurrant, minerals and tobacco; not quite as ripe as the '96. Lovely sweetness and clarity of flavor in the mouth. More supple than the '96, and likely to be approachable much earlier. Finishes with substantial, tongue-coating tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st May 1998
90 Jancis Robinson
While not as backward as the 1996, the opaque purple-colored 1995 is a tannic, unevolved, dense, concentrated wine that will require 8-10 years of cellaring. The 1995 exhibits pain grille, blackcurrant, mineral, and subtle tobacco in its complex yet youthful aromatics. Powerful, dense, concentrated cassis and blueberry flavors might be marginally softer than in the 1996, but there is still plenty of grip and structure to this big wine. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.Robert Parker23rd February 1998
